Alpha: One male, and one female. Alphas are the head of their Pack. Their personality is the same as their Pack's and describes how his/her Packmates treat others. The word of the Alpha is law, proclaimed by the pack code, and all other Pack wolves must obey them. They have their own den, and are assisted by a Beta(s) in their tasks. They are responsible for the whole Pack, calling Pack meetings, appointing wolves to new ranks, and making the toughest decisions. (High Rank)
Tasks:
Beta: One male, and one female. A Fully fledged pack member who is second in command to the alpha, aiding them in their tasks and replacing them immediately after their death. Also, when the alpha is ill or unable to perform their duties, the beta will take the alpha's place until they recover, and they will take their place at any social gatherings if the alpha is absent and cannot attend. (High Rank)
A beta is chosen by the alpha(s) to be their successor. Betas sleep in the fighters'/hunters' den; they do not have their own den like alphas do. Betas are responsible for organizing daily patrols for the Pack, such as hunting patrols and border patrols. If the alpha(s) is unable to lead a Pack temporarily due to sickness, being away from the Pack, etc., then the beta would take over for that time. If a beta is sick or injured, then the Delta will temporarily take his/her place. If the alpha(s) dies, the beta will travel to Moonstone, with the Shaman to speak with the Spirits and Goddess and receive his/her blessings. If a beta dies, the alpha(s) must appoint a new one before moonhigh.
Tasks of a Beta are:
Delta: One male, and one female. Third in command after the Betas, the Delta's follow suit in the hierarchy of power. They too lend a paw in keeping order within the pack, and whatever they say goes, their words only topped by that of the Alpha and Beta. If the Betas are the right paw, then they are the left. They are often present in important discussions, and work together with the Alpha and Beta to ensure that the pack is safe and its members are without quarrels. Similarly to the Beta's ascension to Alpha if anything happens to the current one, Deltas will rise to become the Beta's successors. (High Rank)
The Guardians: One male, and one female. These are brave, courageous souls who have dedicated themselves to protecting the Alpha until their dying breath, a commitment not made for the weary and weak of heart. Their very lives are tied to the Alpha, and if the time ever arose, they would put their lives on the line for their leaders. Guardian's are the Alpha's shield, and thus they must hold within them the strength to protect, excelling in battle and displaying exemplary fighting skill and spirit. (High Rank)
Shaman: Pack wolves who treat disease and injuries. They also receive and interpret omens, prophecies, and guidance from the Moon Goddess. They have their own den in their pack's camp where they store supplies, sleep, and treat the wounded and sickly. They are not allowed to take mates or have pups. They are expected to stand aside and not take part in pack rivalry. Shamans have a unique way of getting their full name (via an important event). They are deeply respected by their packs and few dare argue with them. (High Rank)
Tasks:
Shaman's Apprentice: Pups who wish to become Shamans are apprenticed at the age of three moons to the Pack's current Shaman. They are introduced to the Goddess as a Shaman's Apprentice at the first half moon after they gain apprenticeship. They earn their name at the Moonstone after successfully completing their training, assuming full responsibilities even while their mentor is still alive. (High Rank*)
When an apprentice, the mentor (or fully fledged Shaman), has them do tasks that prepare them for being a full time Shaman. The apprentice has to gather herbs, get water, or do other useful things. They are expected to watch carefully when their mentor is treating a wolf, so that when the time comes, they can do it too.
They are taught healing techniques, such as how to care for the sickly, or what herbs can do. They are usually taught in the den or outside the camp when they gather herbs. They also learn how to interpret signs from the Goddess. After the mentor is satisfied with their progress, they are given a full name at a separate ceremony than typical apprentices.
Lead Fighter: (Three per pack) Chosen from the most skilled among the fighters, the leads are those who plan the pack's battle strategies behind the scenes, logically forming their plots against the enemy alongside the Alpha and any other high ranks that might offer valuable insight. The Lead Fighters are in charge of putting together the fighting parties, as they are the ones who know and trust the fighters the most, and lead their valiant warriors into battle, following behind the Alpha's high command. (High Rank)
Fighters: Fighters are adult pack wolves expected to fight and protect. They are trained in the ways of fighting in addition to the ways of the Pack Code. They are charged with the responsibility to protect those wolves who are elderly or unable to spend time out of pack grounds. Following the Lead Fighter's command, they form the bulk of the pack's fighting forces. They are skilled in combat and do not falter in the face of danger; they fight courageously to protect their family at any cost. They excel in battle against predators, as well as against intruders whether they be fellow wolves or that of another species. If and when the time comes to go to war, they are the ones who will fight alongside their packmates and follow the Lead Fighters/High Ranks into battle. (Regular Rank)
Fighters have the following tasks:
Lead Hunter: (Three per pack) These wolves are the most promising among the hunters; they know the prey's minds just as well as their own, and are able to predict and take advantage of where the herds may move to next and what actions they might take. They are skilled in their hunting techniques and, alongside the hunters of whom they command, work together to provide for the pack. They are in charge of forming/leading hunting parties and decide when, where, and what they will go after. Their talents may also lie in combat. (High Rank)
Hunter: Adult pack wolves expected to hunt and provide. They are trained in the most proficient forms of hunting; in addition to the ways of the pack code. They are charged with the sole responsibility of providing food to the body of the pack. Swift and silent, they hunt in groups organized by the Lead Hunters to provide for the pack, taking down prey with exceptional prowess and teamwork. Their skills also include combat, although it is more geared towards prey rather than other wolves/species that the fighters may encounter. (Regular Rank)
Hunters have the following tasks:
Lead Scouts: (Three per pack) With exceptional speed and swiftness, these wolves are the most prominent of the scouts and are very skilled in tracking, whether it be of prey or of another wolf. They can often be found patrolling the pack's borders, looking out for any danger that might be lurking near, or perhaps wolves who wish to joins the ranks. Together, they lead and plan patrolling parties, and spend a lot of their time making sure the pack is safe. While they may also be skilled in hunting and fighting, their primary duty is to keep an eye on the territory and protect what they can. (High Rank)
Scouts: These wolves are the pack's eyes, anywhere and everywhere at once. They're quick, witty, and spend most of their time patrolling the borders. With their light feet, they are able to report any mishaps or potential dangers to the Alpha/Beta/Delta at a moment's notice, their speed unparalleled by the hunters/fighters. The job can be lonely at times as these wolves keep a eye peeled for danger on the outskirt's of the packs territory, although it is essential nonetheless. They do have skills in battle and in hunting, although it may not be as refined as those in another rank. (Regular Rank)
Scouts have the following tasks:
Elder: An elder is a Pack wolf that has served his or her Pack faithfully, but has now retired. They are wise and held in high respect by the other wolves; their counsel and knowledge is sought by Pack leaders. Elders are to be held with the utmost respect from wolfs of all Packs. They have served the Pack well in the past as Apprentices, fighters and Hunters. During their youth, they took care of the elders of their generation. Now, it is their turn to rest, and the youth of the Pack is to take care of them, in honor of all they have done to serve the Pack. Elders are often susceptible to many diseases and injuries such as green-cough and stiff joints. They are treated by medicine wolves and apprentices. (Regular Rank)
Elder Tasks:
When a Fighter, Scout, Hunter, or Medicine Wolf wishes to retire, an Elder Ceremony is held.
Mothers: The title says it all. While pregnant these wolves are advised to stay within pack territories, as going out in this weakened state may prove dangerous. Frequent trips to the Shaman are recommended to make sure the mother's health stays in check during her pregnancy. How exciting! These wolves must be cared for and protected, as they harbor within them the future of the pack. Vulnerable to sickness, contractions, and mood swings. (Regular Rank)
After about two months (or two weeks OOC) the She-wolves give birth to pups and take care of them, raising them to one day join the wolves above them. They must teach and protect the young, ensuring that they're ready when it comes time to begin training for the rank they aspire to ascend to. These wolves must be caring and compassionate, and overall, patient. Their job, while seemingly simple, is very important and deserves respect. Raising a pup isn't as easy as it looks!
Apprentice: Apprentices are pack pups three moons or older, training to be a warrior/hunter under a mentor. An apprentice becomes a fighter/hunter/scout once their mentor or Pack leader(s) believes they have learned enough. Apprentices can change their position as a fighter/hunter/scout novice to the Shaman's apprentice with permission, or if they have a certain injury. (Regular Rank)
Tasks of apprentices include training with their mentors, going hunting/border patrol with other wolves of their Pack, and looking after the elders, mostly taking ticks out of their pelts.
A pup is usually apprenticed to a mentor at the age of three moons. Mentors are assigned by the Pack leader after an apprentice ceremony; the leader makes such decisions after a brief personality assessment and using good judgement. It is the Mentor's choosing where their apprentice will train. As an apprentice, a wolf learns fighting moves/hunting and becomes familiar with the Pack code. An apprentice is usually not mentored from their blood relatives because they usually go soft on their kin.
During apprenticeship, the apprentice must pass several assessments - tasks their mentor gives them, usually hunting in a specific place, while the mentor follows them unseen to check how are they getting on. An apprenticeship usually lasts for nine moons or more, thus graduated wolves are older than 12 moons.
Pups: Babies of the pack, newly born and unable to take on any more prominent of a rank. As they age, they will be taken on as apprentices and trained by a mentor in the pack. Until then though, they spend their days learning the ways of the world and growing alongside their parents and siblings. Adorable! (Regular Rank)
Omega: One male, and one female. The Omega Wolf is the male or female at the bottom of the hierarchy. The omega Wolf is usually the last to feed at the site of a pack kill. The omega seems to be the scapegoat for the other wolves and generally slinks and submits at the smallest act of aggression by others. When the alpha is in a particularly grouchy mood they may not allow the omega to feed, or constantly dominate him or her.
The omega plays an important role in the pack by acting as a kind of social glue, allowing frustration to be vented without actual acts of war, which could threaten the pack structure, from breaking out. As such, they are deeply loved and cared for. They can typically be found starting up little games of tag or tug-of-war to keep the mood within the pack lighthearted and happy. (Low Rank**)
